If you were looking for Yorkeys Knob Junior Soccer you found us, only we are now known as Yorkeys Knob Junior Football, which ever way it is still the Yorkeys Hornets. The original club was formed in the 1970's, nobody can give the exact year but we are still around kicking the football(soccer ball) about the park. From the early days when one of our teams was virtually the FNQ rep team, to other seasons; when player numbers were large, so to save on travelling times another club was able to bud from us; to that season when we only fielded a few teams.
Season 2010 and yorkeys junior football fielded five teams, the rebuilding of the club. The 2010 season raised a matter of concern for all clubs and the association, the decreased registration in the under 6 division(4v4) at all but 2 clubs and no club increased the U/6 age group compared to last year. Although based at Yorkeys Knob the surrounding suburbs of Smithfield, Caravonica, Trinity Park and Hollaways Beach all contribute players, parents, coaches and volunteers. The Yorkeys Hornets play in the Cairns and Districts (C.D.S.A.) competition with fixtures are played at Endeavour Park soccer grounds in Cairns (most junior soccer games are at this central venue Endeavour Park [street map and map of football fields ] ).
Amongst these swaying palms, our junior players are taught about the world game, skills required for playing soccer, personal development and, above all to enjoy the game, have some fun while respecting their fellow players. While we might be there to win the game, football / soccer is about more than just winning.
Even though some of our players may come from the surrounding suburbs, the Hornets are still a community based club, creating a bigger football community.
Small-Sided Game
In 2009 & 2010, FFA in conjunction with Member Federations, Zones Associations and Clubs continued the roll out of Small-Sided Games, now known as Optus Small-Sided Football(SSF). FFA is delighted to welcome Optus to the team, as the official partner of the Game Development Program, a key component of FFA’s national strategic framework to improve football at all levels of the game. Optus Small-Sided Football(SSF) is about learning, self-experiencing, having a lot of touches on the ball and above all, children having fun every time they step on the pitch.
The future of your son, daughter or pupil, as a “player for fun” or as a future Qantas Socceroo or Westfield Matilda, must begin with Optus Small-Sided Football(SSF). As always, Member Federations, associations, clubs, coaches, officials and parents will play a key role in revolutionising and creating the right playing environment for our young players.
